Foodening..

I've decided to start building my SHTF kit right now, because the sooner I start the sooner I'll have it, you can't live without food so I figured I'd start with that.

Brought home from the store today:

2x self opening tin Beach Cliff fish steaks in soybean oil (Exp 2013)

2x self opening tin Crown Prince kipper snacks (Exp 2013)

1x bag Vigo black beans & rice (Exp ???)

1x can generic corned beef hash (Exp 2012)

1x package dehydrated mashed potato (Exp ???)

probably not the most healthy or balanced stuff ever, but it's a start.

Now that I look at the Beach Cliff website I'm saddened to see that the fish steaks are high in cholesterol and fat and don't have much of anything else. Oh well, if SHTF I won't be sitting around on my ass so I doubt it will matter. The Vigo beans fair slightly better having a total of 760 calories in a bag, with 4 servings. too bad the sodium is 40% of your DV. I'm not even going to begin to talk about the nutritional qualities of the corned beef hash lol. The potatoes are a mystery since the bags are generic and unmarked, I bet they taste good enough though.

Now that I think of it, grits would be a pretty damned good SHTF food, they're dry, last forever, taste ok, only need water to cook. Also one bag will expand to be enough cooked grits to fill your entire room to the ceiling. Plus you can mix them with anything, for instance kippered herrings :3.

I have enough money right now but I think I will purchase my ALICE pack after i get the next paycheck from work.

I will continue to buy 1 peice of SHTF capable food every time I go to the grocery store, if I do this for the rest of my life I will not kill my wallet, and will be assured of having more than enough food to shoose from should S actually HTF.

  1. I do believe my hashed browns are superior to your mashed potatoes.

    Harumph.
